Hair Loss: When Is It Normal and When Should You See a Doctor?
How to tell normal shedding from abnormal hair loss, the most common causes, and when a consultation makes a difference.
Dr. Karim Elshourbagy · 2026-10-07It is normal to lose some hair every day, as hair is constantly renewing itself. Concern begins when shedding clearly increases or persists.
Signs that need a consultation
- Increased shedding for more than two months
- Noticeable thinning at the front of the head or on the scalp
- Round patches or bald spots
- Shedding with itching, flaking or redness of the scalp
The most common causes
- Genetics (hereditary pattern hair loss in men and women)
- Shedding after an illness, childbirth, a strict diet or psychological stress — this usually improves
- Iron or vitamin D deficiency, or thyroid problems
- Alopecia areata
Treatment starts with the cause
During the consultation we examine the scalp carefully and request tests if needed, then set the plan: topical or oral treatment, and PRP or mesotherapy sessions if suitable.
Keep your expectations realistic
Shedding decreases within one to two months, and improvement in density shows after 3–6 months of consistent treatment.
